| Welcome to the website www.philanthropie.lu This website, initiated by Banque de Luxembourg, has been designed to provide information on the symposium and charitable giving in Luxembourg. |
The traditional image of the philanthropist is the person who, when writing his will, decides to leave part of his wealth to "charity". Until now. The new breed of philanthropists have many different profiles: the donor, who, having reached a certain point in his or her life, is looking for new challenges in a second career that unites the family around a common project; the donor, from a wealth background, who wants to give something back by sharing part of his or her wealth: or the donor who has worked all his life to be able to give time and the benefit of their knowledge to others.
Being committed to philanthropy is not just about giving money. It has also to do with passing on knowledge or time to a charity or association. In one way or another, each person can do their bit and get involved in helping others in a cause deemed just, charitable or that is close to their heart.
The expertise acquired by many donors when building or managing their wealth represents a precious asset that few social workers, researchers, artists or environmental campaigners have or are able to offer. And yet, such expertise can make a project more economically viable and therefore more sustainable.
Philanthropy is always a gamble, but it is a sensible gamble. It is perfectly positioned to address a whole series of challenges. Unlike governments and businesses that have to explain their actions to voters and shareholders, in the philanthropic arena, decisions are made faster without lengthy administrative procedures. A considerable advantage when a campaign needs to be launched quickly or a long-term operation needs to be organised.
Nothing but good can be said about philanthropy. When it comes to redistributing wealth, testing new ideas, and making a change in society, the philanthropic approach is second to none. Somewhere between instinct and reflection, enthusiasm and uncertainty, philanthropy is above all a human matter.
