Inspiring, offputting or irrelevant?
How do other
donors see Gates?
The Gateses ‘are helping to set a cultural expectation that to be wealthy is to be engaged in philanthropy that makes a difference’. So, at least, thinks a US observer and donor adviser, Sean Stannard-Stockton of Tactical Philanthropy. Few would dispute that the influence of the Gates Foundation on philanthropy is likely to be profound, but how exactly will it affect the ideas and practices of other donors?

Focus on philanthropy advice: a profession in search of standards
Interview Philippe Depoorter - Head of Philanthropy Advisory Services
To
sum up, we prefer to do what we are good at and focus on the areas in
which we have legitimacy to act and can add value. This means three
things:
developing the philanthropic profile, structuring the vehicle and
managing the assets. Everything else we outsource. And if the
structuring aspect is too complicated, we work with lawyers.

How are philanthropic habits evolving? Set against the backdrop of the global downturn, it is encouraging to see how much of a priority philanthropy has become and will
continue to be. The report also indicates that a younger and ambitious type of philanthropist is emerging – a positive sign for causes and charities around the world.
The paper is based on consultation with 500 UK and US-based high net worth and ultra high net worth individuals. In addition, it uses the perspectives and insights of a wider panel of international experts drawn from charity, industry and finance circles.
A new trend is emerging in evaluation: The development of innovative systems that enable hundreds or thousands of nonprofit organizations to measure their performance on common indicators and shared evaluation platforms. Breakthroughs in Shared Measurement and Social Impact, released by FSG Social Impact Advisors with generous support from The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, highlights 20 examples of social enterprises that have developed innovative and coordinated web-based approaches to reporting performance, outcome and impact measurements over multiple social enterprises and stakeholders. The resulting reports share key findings from this research, as well as detailed case studies and additional resources to promote further learning and discussion on this topic.

How the struggling economy is hurting donations.
The financial crisis affects even a foundation as richly endowed as the Gates’
organization because its endowment is invested in capital markets. As of Oct. 2, 2008, it was $35.1 billion, and Bill Gates has said it was off 20 percent for all of 2008.

A pulse survey conducted by Coutts & Co at the Coutts Forum for Philanthropy reveals that 87% of philanthropists surveyed are expecting to either increase (42%) or maintain the same level (45%) of their charitable donations over the upcoming year, despite the economic downturn. The survey, conducted among over 100 clients who attended the Forum, suggests that charities are not going to lose out from the downturn.
An article in Belgian newspaper "L’Echo" focuses on the challenges in the philanthropy sector since the start of the crisis. This subject will be explored at the Symposium on 9 October 2009.
