Workshop 2 : Foundations’ financial management

Foundation leaders face many challenges at present as they try to manage effectively the financial resources for which they are responsible within a period of economic recession and of crisis within financial markets. Protecting assets, managing transactions efficiently, seizing new opportunities to extend the ways a foundation’s investment strategy can be better connected in practice with its values and mission – these tasks require the application of a range of knowledge and expertise.

This workshop will explore:
• How to ensure that a foundation’s systems for processing grants and managing its other financial tasks and transactions are as cost effective and efficient as possible
• How to ensure that foundations use a full ‘menu’ of types of finance to support their chosen causes and priorities – to ‘go beyond grants’
• How foundation leaders can align more closely their foundation’s investment strategy to the values and aims which it was set up to advance
• How to ensure that foundation leaders exercise their fiduciary duties to the highest standards, are alert to potential risks and have the appropriate knowledge and skills to manage their financial resources with the greatest impact and effectiveness.
